Summer

the season of poor

i’ve arrived back home and it’s the end of august: the unofficial ending of my favorite season. school is right around the corner for the kiddos (which means our jobs start up again) and budějovice is putting on a lovely show for us: sunny 22°C weather and the annual end of august festivities that are to occur this weekend. it seems like czech republic is welcoming us back with a sheepish smile. today alone we’ve run into two different nice ladies, the weather is good, the groceries (and really, everything) is cheap again, the stores are overflowing with delicious produce (and squash!!!). i feel like forgiving it for any way it has possibly ever wronged us before and making amends.

now comes the self-inflicted season of poor, which occurs at the beginning of every september. we do this to ourselves, with spending every last penny we’ve made over the past year on travel over the summer only to return penniless. nothing in the bank and no hope of a paycheck for at least another month. our visas are coming due again as well, which means the mass-purchasing of more health insurance is nigh.

however, i actually don’t mind our temporary state of broke-assery too much. it gives me a chance to do what i am best at: being resourceful! cooking meals from scratch, buying in bulk and trying to use up food well before it spoils, thinking of creative dinner ideas. making my own granola & kimchi again, replenishing the stores that were laid more than bare during our twenty-two days away. the coming of autumn is like my new year. new classes, a new hair color, wonderful summer memories to look back on to fuel my inspiration for the next several months, and hey, a new look for adventurings. (you have to click on individual post links to comment though, fyi)

what are you looking forward to with the change of the seasons? hope you enjoy the heck out of the rest of august.
