A Whole Lotta Rain

it started raining saturday morning and it has not once stopped as i write this late monday afternoon. nuts! people are like, “oh but you’re from seattle so you’re used to this”. errrrg……. not really, right guys? in case you haven’t read about it, the central europe floods are making international news. i think today will be the worst of it and the rain is supposed to let up. in prague, the city is paralyzed. schools are shuttered, transportation is at a halt. the animals from the low-lying zoo near the river are being rescued. the metro station near our old ‘hood (malostranska) is closed.

here in budejovice, we are at the confluence of two rivers and the vltava sure was roaring and roiling today as i crossed it. right now the water level is covering boat ramps and the low walking areas near the river, like you see in the photo above.  sandbags, caution tape.  meanwhile nearby cesky krumlov is getting hit as hard as prague, if not harder, says alex’s boss who lives there. there is standing water at many locations around the town.  crazy to think all of the water is now heading up to prague to ’cause even more grief. but i will refrain from getting more dramatic than this. not an awesome time to visit the czech republic.

today i went to alex’s first grade english class and did some observations for upcoming summer camp. got to watch him try to wrangle 12 rowdy six year olds and learn some techniques.
