The Beginning of a Massive Poland Trip: Krakow
kraków was the first stop on my polish odyssey, just a mere hour or two over the czech border. i visited eight years ago, but it feels like an eternity. back then, i remember thinking at the time how polish was the most incomprehensible language i’ve ever seen or heard and that it was nearly impossible to pronounce or decipher any of it. but after living in the czech republic for almost two years, i was pleased to see that many words and phrases are similar and communicating hasn’t been a problem. it feels good to have this slavic language knowledge, although i am still an amateur… a learned…

Thoughts From a Polish Karaoke Bar
i spent my first night in poland at a funky bar in kraków and couldn’t help but notice these thoughts run through my mind… 1) wow, everyone here is a great singer. 2) they really like metal here! 3) okay, two metallica songs in a row is TOO MUCH. 4) i feel like i’m learning so much polish by just watching this. 5) now i need to see the movie frozen because i can sing the chorus of that “let it go” song in polish! it works in any language, turns out. (mam te moc!) 6) if you request AC/DC, i am going to kill you. or just stare daggers,…

when planning this big ol’ three week (so long! so ambitious!) summer trip of mine, i kept asking myself: what makes the best trip? i know a lot of us are going on summer holidays and we’re all hoping that our trips are heavy with those magical moments. we all plan full days of museums, sight-seeing, tours, excursions… it it occurred to me: how memorable are doing those things? sometimes i can barely remember a museum i went to three years ago.so, it took a bit of an examination on my part to think about my favorite memories from trips of the past ten years and really think about what…

summertime, pt II
happy august, friends. this week off for me has been so necessary have a enough trip research time for my big backpacking trip around poland… which i leave for in a couple days! although it wasn’t the dazzling sunny summer week i had been hoping for (more like humid, cloudy, and scattered showers) i have enjoyed it immensely. for the past two years august has been my month to play! (never for the life of me could i ever figure out what lana del ray sings about in “summertime sadness”) it’s always been an optimistic and exciting season full of fun and possibility. to support alex while he’s still working,…

i was inspired to take part in the day in the life project because i’m one of those curious individuals that loves to take a peak into the daily routine of someone else. also, i think it would be really nice to look back on sometime and hopefully, interesting or insightful for you! for this day, i chose friday, july 25, 2014, the last day of summer camps. all events take place in either české budĕjovice or český krumlov in south-west czech republic. … 5:40am: the alarm goes off. since it’s summer, it’s light enough to get ready without having to turn on a lamp. shower & get dressed in red…

next ten years of travel
it seemed fitting the day that adventurings finally got it’s real home on the web (adventurings.com!) that i get an email alerting me of this blog’s second “birthday”. it’s pretty neat knowing my big adventure is over two years old. not only that, but this week i’m celebrating my big TEN YEARS of europe travel-versary: a decade from the time i took my first europe trip (celebrating my high school graduation) to five cities in five countries with two of my buddies. so in honor of this, i’ve got a couple of travel-y posts prepared. ‘cause man, ten years of traveling europe seems like kind of a big deal to…

vintgar gorge
while in slovenia, i wanted a hike! it didn’t have to be a big one, but i definitely wanted to be immersed in the nature of the area and see something cool. enter vintgar gorge, on the southeastern edge of the triglavski national park, where the julian alps are also found. from bled jezero station, we took a train one stop north to podhom (5 min), and walked for about fifteen minutes through a nice little village, the kind where everyone says dober dan to each other. vintgar gorge for nature and water lovers, is stunning. it’s also easy to get to and doesn’t involve a day-long time commitment. one…

best commute
honestly the best commute to work i ever had and probably will ever have. i worked in nearby český krumlov this week (like last year– summer camp!). all the czech food and bus ride combination is starting to make me really nauseous (very easily car-sick) but my days are full and good. and the walk to work is pinch-me beautiful. oh, south bohemia, you’re so lovely.it’s the end of week three (my last week at camp) and i’m starting to seriously lose my mind. i love kids and playing with them, and i’m a bit convinced that there aren’t very many better jobs than hanging out with some kiddos, but the…

julian alps
hello all! i’m back to tell you more about slovenia– specifically, the mountainous part. i was telling you last tuesday about my lovely camping trip to lake bled and how it was anything but relaxing, for better or worse. it was because i wanted the full slovenia experience, and this meant journeying deep into the triglav national park (located in the northwest corner of the country including a little bit of italy) which includes the julian alps (named for julius caeser). i know you may have not known slovenia had an adriatic coastline, but did you know there were alps too? yep. mostly known for the time ernest hemingway spent…

summertime
it’s past the halfway point of my favorite month of the year. (okay, actually that’s december but this takes a close second) that means it’s time to step back and think about how i best want to enjoy my summer. really, i want things to sloooooowww down a little bit, but between hanging out with czech kids for ten hours a day every day for three weeks (i’ve just finished week two!) it’s kind of hard for that to happen. on one hand, it’s inspirational since kids are all about just enjoying a simple moment. on the other hand, i often come home exhausted, but doing something simple like eating…
