prague | 24 hours in holešovice

    June 20, 2019 /

last month we were in prague for a concert and ended up staying in holešovice, simply because the cheapest private accommodation available was there. and not only in holešovice (which is a large swath of prague 7 that sort of encircles prague’s bubny train station), but east holešovice. i go there whenever i visit the DOX museum, but industrial east holešovice does not seem to be a favorite area of praguers. i asked a couple that i knew, “hey! where do you like to go in east holešovice?"   "um……..”“i mean, pražská tržnice is there. and so is cafe jedna. right?”“……can’t you just go to letná?” the letná side of holešovice…

So, You’re Going to Prague? (A Mini-Guide of my Favorites)

    May 12, 2016 /

prague is now europe’s fifth most visited city as of 2016, surpassed by only london, paris, istanbul, and rome. so chances are, if you haven’t already been, you might be planning on going to prague soon, especially since summer’s coming up. i get a few emails and comments about what to do in prague, and man, that’s a hard question to answer in an email, let alone a comment! so! consider this post my e-mail to you about my favorite things and places to visit in the city.  this is by no means an exhaustive guide (hah) but rather just my favorite places that i’ve been to loads of times and like…

    prague metro roulette: invalidovna

    October 8, 2015 /

so, i think i mostly have the general prague thing pretty under control by now. i adore a stroll over the charles bridge (at anytime of year! at anytime of day!) and a wander through the winding streets of old town, and i think i always will, but sometimes it’s time to get creative to really get to know the city outside of the fairy tale center. enter: prague metro roulette. i choose a metro stop at random that i have either never gone to (or just once before) that i feel like i wouldn’t know the area above it if i was there. then, i go there, document it,…

    prague autumn magic

    September 30, 2015 /

i am totally down with visitors, man. i think if i was in a bigger or more well-known city, i would probably have more friends passing through, so i am pretty much ecstatic when someone comes to visit. enter, long-lost college buddy, monica, who happens to be a fellow seattle to europe expat living in luxembourg! we had so much fun taking her to all of the tasty nom-nom places, wandering old town at night just waiting for that fifteen second “morality play” at the beautiful astronomical clock. climbing major hills for some of the best views over the city. buying halloween costume implements at the costume shop. drinking our…

best summer prague day (along the vltava)

    September 2, 2015 /

as prague is still sort of a winter city to me (scowls, trams, winter coats, and the smell of svařák come to mind) i wanted to make an effort to change that and get to know its lovely summer self this month a bit better. and it has come to my attention that hangin’ by the vltava river for the day is a very good way to spend a breezy summer day. start, for example, at náplavka on a saturday morning… of the markets i’ve seen, náplavka has something reeeeal special, which explains its popularity. the best vegetables that this hot weather could produce, fresh-squeezed juices, some seeeeriously delicious looking single-origin…

    in prague: botanical garden

    May 15, 2015 /

as a spring baby, i have developed a great love of visiting some sort of garden on my birthday. early may is usually prime time to see certain flowers in bloom and everything around looks positively lovely. so when one of my friends here in budějovice tipped me off that the butterflies are hatching from their chrysalises at a special event on the prague botanical garden in troja, i mentally made my afternoon plans.  the garden isn’t located in the center but rather the far reaches of prague’s seventh district, beyond holešovice. the butterfly event goes from early april to early may (just over one month), so we were there…

    prague birthday

    May 11, 2015 /

hi friends! i just took two full days off from doing anything except having birthday adventures, and it was quite a wise decision, really. by the time my head hit the pillow on night two, i was completely exhausted. the good kind, like you want. i spent it in prague this year and started the day with a growling stomach, so decided to finally give cantina a try. back when i was living in prague and totally broke, i would walk past this restaurant on the way home from going to the supermarket and wish that someday soon i could go here, as it has reputedly the best mexican cuisine in…

expat’s dream: the dutch pub, prague

    April 30, 2015 /

this is the land of beer. czech republic makes it’s famous claim as both home to pilsner (from plzeň) and the original budweiser (from here in budějovice, international name budweis). so don’t hate me for going to prague’s new dutch gastropub near národní třída . it’s just…. i love belgian beer way too much. czech beer is wonderful, but since the last time i was in the benelux region was about eight years ago, i am really missing my favorite belgians right now. (i’m talking about the beer) the dutch pub is a huge complex, yet somehow manages to feel really homey with its wooden round tables, football playing on…

    of markets & museums, prague

    April 14, 2015 /

i finally got to see those famous prague easter markets the day before easter sunday after missing them by chance for a few years, and i have to say, i don’t know what i was expecting (perhaps something more low key like budějovice’s easter market?) but they completely surpassed any expectation. i am well familiar by now with the extravaganza that is the prague old town square christmas market, and the easter market was basically the spring version of this. same viewing platform that you can climb to get a good view. same kingswood cider tent, only decorated for spring this time. i loved the (fake) cherry blossom trees that…

    a tree blooms in žižkov

    April 9, 2015 /

žižkov is one area of prague that i never really got to know on a personal level.  it’s supposedly got the most pubs per capita of anywhere in the world and is well known as a place where expats congregate and live because of cheaper rents and um, said pubs. my prague expat existence never included ol’ žižkov as i was swept from crumbling kolbenova to plush malá strana in one day (and ohhh, what a day it was). but a part of me can’t help like i missed out on the experience, with our schmancy st. nicholas cathedral and trdelník on demand (well, we were pretty broke then; i…
